Turning what is usually familiar into something foreign and opaque in order to alert perception: This could serve as a guideline for Mathilde Aubineau’s approach. In her eyes, the stage is a wilderness, i.e. something different, foreign, that responds to codes that elude us but appeal to an ‘archaic’ and untamed part of ourselves. L’unique dernière heure du 31 décembre (‘The last single hour of 31 December’) arises from the need to create a form of theatre that calls upon the senses, feelings and imagination of the audience, a work that appeals to a part of us that remains elusive because it cannot be captured with words. Seeking a gesture devoid of all intent, the young director echoes issues that pervade many of Fernand Deligny’s works, probing humankind above and below the image we may have of men: Have human beings always been men and women?
