Imagine all your friends and acquaintances gathered together in a forest cabin chatting about you. How would you like that? They might suddenly decide to play some Thugger tunes at full blast for you. And what do you think of the Prosecco they’re drinking?’ Based on his experience of mourning and the history of funeral rites, Oliver Roth appropriates the codes applied to such events. But rather than pursue the question of the deceased, While You Were Dead – A Social Convention focuses on the living. If funerals are well and truly a moment of togetherness, can’t they also be festive?
