Melanie Durrer’s new creation revolves around fathers and, more broadly, patriarchy and the notion of both individual and collective responsibility. She delicately navigates between childhood memories spent aboard a boat and the tragic sinking of the Costa Concordia in 2012. Two boats, two captains, and a pattern that keeps repeating. A story of men who disappear, of captains refusing to go down with their ship, of fathers evading responsibility, proving emotionally absent and vanishing without a word.
So what can be done to ensure these symbolic father figures no longer desert the vessel and instead assume their responsibilities? Can we become fathers to one another? And when, finally, is someone going to put sunscreen on my face?
