Estelle Samira Borel (director, performer, Black woman, Afrofeminist and prominent figure of the contemporary Swiss circus scene) centres her work on proximity with audiences, provocative social issues and risk-taking. Delicately, she intertwines intimacy and politics through the body, giving meaning and depth to acrobatics. With Nez Noir, she offers a decolonial perspective on Switzerland and, more specifically, on Valais, where she grew up.
At the crossroads of artistic forms, Nez Noir weaves together performative, circus-based and textual writing. Singular anecdotes and historical facts become entangled within a personal and highly original cartography. Balancing on a tightrope, Estelle Samira Borel knits together, and carefully unravels, the threads of her identity and of the relationship she maintains with the region known for its famous, black-nosed sheep.
