Wednesday 12.08 at 20:30 – introduction to the performance in the foyer of Usine à Gaz

Moving between languages, geographies, voices and worldviews, Language: no broblem sheds light on the complexity of multilingualism within a system of oppression. The performance follows a train journey through Belgium — a voyage that is at once introspective and uncanny, during which Marah Haj Hussein encounters a series of intriguing figures. Her personal story intertwines with those of family members living under occupation. Their voices bear witness to their relationship with Palestinian Arabic, their mother tongue, and with Hebrew, the official language of the country in which they live.

This narrative highlights one of the often-unspoken effects of colonialism: the active yet subtle mechanisms through which, slowly and across generations, the language of the coloniser comes to replace that of the colonised. Blending humour, anger, tenderness and absurdity, the performance ultimately explores the limits of linguistic translatability while opening up a broader reflection on forms of resistance.
